How To Control Creeping Beggarweed in St Augustine Grass in South Florida?

November 7, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

Creeping beggarweed, scientifically known as Desmodiumincanum, is extremely hard to manage once it has become ingrained in your St. Augustine turf grass. Creeping beggarweed is a broadleaf weed whose seeds are known as hitchhikers because they “stick” to your socks, shoe laces, pants and other clothing and get stuck in your pets fur. The seeds or hitchhikers are then transported to new areas where the seeds create a new creeping beggarweed infestation. They can also reproduce from the weed’s stolen or a piece of its impressive taproot. Creeping beggarweed also produce a pinkish purple flower in the summer.

Even manually pulling creeping beggarweed can be problematic because of its strong, large taproot. Just a tiny piece of the root can grow into a new weed. The best way to control creeping beggarweed in your Palm Beach County lawn is to use a quality post-emergent herbicide that is safe for St. Augustine sod grass.

* Unlike many South Florida weeds, pre-emergent herbicides are largely ineffective on creeping beggarweed because its large taproot can tolerate them and be used to propagate new weeds.

Post-emergent Herbicides Safe for St. Augustine Turf Grass are the Best Way to Control Creeping Beggarweed in Palm Beach County

Roundup® is a herbicide product that will kill just about everything green, so be careful when using this product as it will damage your lawn and ornamental landscaping plants as well.

Creeping beggarweed, just like other weeds, competes with your lawn’s sod grass for nutrients and irrigation. So once again the healthier and thicker your lawn is, the harder it is for creeping beggarweed to prosper in the first place. Professional lawn treatment that includes fertilization service and pest control combined with weed control is the best way to maintain a healthy, beautiful lawn in Palm Beach County.

Why not leave your creeping beggarweed problems to the professionals. Our locally owned and operated company can keep your lawn looking great with complete professional lawn treatment that includes weed control service. We have been treating West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington and Jupiter, Florida residential and commercial lawns for decades and have the experience to get the job done right.

We offer natural, environmentally friendly and pet friendly lawn weed control products as an option to our clients. Our experienced technicians can discuss your concerns and the options available to you.

What Month Should I Fertilize My Lawn in Palm Beach County Florida

November 6, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Lawn fertilization service West Palm Beach, FL

What months should I fertilize my lawn is a popular question for our Palm Beach County customers. Unlike most Northern states and even parts of Northern and Central Florida, in South Florida your lawn grows year-round no matter what type of sod you have. St. Augustine, Bahiagrass, Bermudagrass and Zoysiagrass all need proper care and each has different irrigation and nutrient needs. Having your soil tested can tell you more precisely what nutrients are missing and needed most. But the single biggest factor when it comes to fertilizing your lawn is to only fertilize when your lawn is actively growing.

The Single Biggest Factor When it Comes to Fertilizing Your Lawn is to Only Fertilize When Your Lawn is Actively Growing

But you also need to make sure you are doing things properly and legally. Fertilizer runoff in many areas is a leading cause of pollution to South Florida’s lakes, rivers and estuaries. If you insist on fertilizing your own lawn, please check with city and municipal ordinances. When in doubt, just ask!

The Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Program has an app that allows you to enter your location and see the fertilizer ordinances that apply to you.

The highly experienced lawn fertilization and pesticide professionals at our locally owned and operated company can help you decide which fertilizer treatment is best for your Palm Beach County lawn. We can also provide a combination of fertilizer, weed control and pesticide tailored to your lawn’s specific needs in one regularly scheduled visit to keep your West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Jupiter and other Palm Beach County, Florida cities lawn and landscaping looking its best. And best of all, you only pay for the applications you need and approve.

We offer natural, environmentally friendly and pet friendly lawn fertilization and pesticide products as an option to our clients. Our experienced technicians can discuss your concerns and the options available to you.

How Long To Keep Pets Off Lawn After Fertilizer Treatment

November 6, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

After you have had your lawn treated with fertilizer, weed control spray or pesticides it is essential to wait until these products completely dry before allowing children and pets to play in your South Florida commercial or residential lawn. In hot and sunny Palm Beach County, that can be as soon as a few hours, but it is best to err on the side of caution. Professionals recommend 24-72 hours after a lawn treatment before pets be allowed back on your South Florida lawn.

With granular fertilizers, make sure to water thoroughly after application for maximum absorption and then wait until dry. In South Florida the weather can change rapidly which will affect absorption rates and drying times, so don’t forget to keep that in mind.

When in doubt, please ask your lawn treatment company for their specific recommendations as they are the ones that know what products they are using and different products will have different drying and absorption times.

Professionals Generally Recommend 24-72 Hours After Lawn Treatment Before Pets Be Allowed Back on Your South Florida Lawn

Our company does offer natural, pet friendly lawn pesticide and fertilization products as an option to our Palm Beach County clients and our trained technicians can discuss your concerns and the best options available to you. But as a general rule anytime you put any type of fertilizer, herbicide or pesticide chemical on your lawn, make sure and read the instructions about wait times for allowing children and pets to return safely.

A quality lawn treatment company like ours cares about its customers and will make every reasonable effort to satisfy them. We understand no two lawns are alike and customize our professional fertilization and pest control services to meet your specific needs. Individual lawn and garden pests are dealt with as needed and our customers are billed only for the applications they need and approve.

What Grass is Resistant to Sugarcane Mosaic Virus?

November 4, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

Unlike most lawn diseases caused by fungi, a viral infection like sugarcane mosaic virus can’t be treated with fungicides or pesticides. Viral lawn diseases can be devastating to Palm Beach County lawns and in extreme cases may kill the entire lawn. This is referred to as LVN or lethal viral necrosis.

The most popular sod grass for West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Jupiter and other Palm Beach County, Florida cities is St. Augustine sod and some HOAs and communities in Palm Beach County even require it. Floratam is an extremely popular variety of St. Augustine grass that unfortunately is particularly vulnerable to sugarcane mosaic virus. Bermudagrass and bahiagrass are also susceptible, but to a lessor extent.

Bitterblue and Palmetto are both varieties of St. Augustine grass that are more resistant to sugarcane mosaic virus and the state of Florida even suggests using Palmetto type St. Augustine sod. If St. Augustine sod isn’t a requirement, Zoysiagrass might be a good choice as it does not seem to be susceptible to virus.

How to Get Rid of Whiteflies on Your Palm Beach County Palm Trees?

November 3, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Professional Spiraling White Fly Control

Spiraling whiteflies or rugose spiraling whiteflies (Aleurodicus rugioperculatus) are an invasive species that were first introduced into South Florida around 2009 and rapidly became a serious problem in Palm Beach County disfiguring and killing many different species of palm trees and ornamental landscaping shrubs in West Palm Beach, Wellington, Palm Beach Gardens and Jupiter. Coconut Palm trees and White Bird of Paradise plants were especially hard hit. The spiraling white fly feeds by sucking out nutrients and water from the infected host plant causing major stress and stunted growth.

Rugose spiraling whiteflies also are a major problem because of the mess they create to pools, patios, outdoor furniture and other outside valuables by excreting what is called “honey dew”, which causes the rapid growth of a black mold which then covers everything in the infected area with a hard to remove layer of black soot. Pools beneath trees infected with spiraling white fly can become covered in a milky white “snow” and the honey dew will deplete chlorine and stain the decking. Ants and other pests are also attracted to the honey dew, which can be the start of a whole new problem.

Removing these nuisance pests before they cause too much damage is the answer. It is a lot cheaper to treat spiraling white flies than it is to replace your beautiful trees and shrubs and pressure clean all the black soot off your patios and driveways.

Arborjet Tree Injections are Currently the Best Treatment for Whitefly Infestations on Palm Beach County Palm Trees

Our locally owned and operated company has trained pesticide professionals that have been treating Jupiter, Wellington, Palm Beach Gardens and West Palm Beach palm trees with Arborjet tree injections for spiraling white flies and other pests for decades and have the expertise to get the job done right the first time at a price you can afford. And unlike pesticide sprays or soil soaks, Arborjet tree injections put the insecticide inside the palm tree which limits impacting the environment and is safe for you and your pets.

Who Can Diagnose South Florida Lawn Problems?

November 3, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Lawn treatment company West Palm Beach, FL

A professional lawn treatment specialist can usually diagnose your South Florida lawn problems by checking for lawn pests, unusual discoloration, fungi and diseases, or even deficient irrigation problems via a simple visual inspection and possibly a soil test. In extreme situations, a soil sample may need to be sent to The University of Florida for further review.

South Florida lawn problems can be caused by a variety of different issues from something as simple as improper irrigation to something as complex as sugarcane mosaic virus, so getting the proper diagnoses can mean the difference between a simple fungicide application to a complete removal and replacement of your sod grass. Lawn pests, drought damage, fertilizer deficiencies and lawn diseases all can cause your lawn to appear to be under attack, but understanding the root cause of your problem early can save you a lot of money down the road. Our Palm Beach County professional lawn treatment technicians have the knowledge to detect the signs of lawn pest problems, lawn diseases other possible lawn problems before they become overwhelming.

Symptoms of Possible Lawn Disease

  • Does your lawn have unusual spots or lesions on the sod grass blades?
  • Does your lawn have repetitive spots covering the turf grass area?
  • Does your lawn have patches of discoloration for no apparent reason?
  • Does your lawn have seem to be covered in baby powder?

Lawn diseases are commonly overlooked because they are easily mistaken with other lawn problems such as chinch bug damage or drought. A lawn treatment professional should be able to catch lawn diseases at an early stage before it becomes too late to repair the damage caused by them.

*A viral infection like sugarcane mosaic virus can’t be treated with fungicides and can be devastating to Palm Beach County lawns. In severe cases it may kill the entire lawn, which is called LVN or lethal viral necrosis. Beware of any lawn treatment company that says they can cure sugarcane mosaic virus. Also, it may be necessary for us to send a soil sample to The University of Florida to positively identify sugarcane mosaic virus.

The best way to maintain a healthy, beautiful South Florida lawn is with the proper combination of fertilization, weed control and pest control. Add in adequate irrigation, disease management and lawn maintenance and you should be enjoying a beautiful, lush, green lawn year-round.

Why not leave your lawn treatment problems to a professional.
