Cutworms aren’t really worms at all, but rather the larvae stage of certain moth species. In South Florida the majority of cutworm problems come from the granulate cutworm, scientifically known as Feltia subterranea, which are common in the tropical climates. These moth larvae love to feed at night and wrap themselves around seedling stems just above your soil, but are usually hidden from plain view. Cutworms, like their name implies, actually do cut plant seedlings in half which results in the death of the plant or sod grass. Granulate cutworm infestations can cause severe damage to your Palm Beach County lawn that include large patches of dead sod grass. And while they prefer newly seeded lawns and landscape seedlings, keep an eye out for ornamental landscaping with wilting leaves, randomly cut stems and plants with holes in the leaves. They may be the victim of cutworms.
Cutworms do have plenty of natural enemies including parasitic nematodes, lizards and birds, but if your lawn or ornamental landscaping is under attack by an infestation it is unlikely natural predators will be enough to control the problem. There are also plenty of DIY yard enthusiasts that are convinced coffee grounds are a great cutworm deterrent, but unfortunately science hasn’t been able to back that claim up.
The good news is that there are insecticides that will effectively eliminate you cutworm problem in both your lawn and ornamental landscaping. And once the cutworms are removed, your lawn can recover with proper fertilization and irrigation.
