Palm Beach County is filled with beautiful lakes, lagoons, rivers and estuaries. From Lake Okeechobee to the Intracoastal Waterway and Lake Worth Lagoon, all these life-supporting bodies of water can become polluted from fertilizer runoff that can make its way all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. Excess phosphates from fertilizer have been linked to blue-green algae, which pollutes the water that fish, wading birds, turtles, and other South Florida wildlife need to survive. These bodies of water also support our underground aquifer which supplies our drinking water, so to say they are ecologically important is an understatement.
Having a beautiful, lush, green lawn that is the envy of your neighbors in Palm Beach County isn’t easy. The soil is sandy in most parts and the tropical climate requires irrigation, pest control and fertilization to keep it looking great. But fertilizing your lawn within the law is critical to the South Florida waterways you love and enjoy. If you insist on fertilizing your own lawn, please check with city and municipal ordinances. When in doubt, just ask!
In Palm Beach County and many other South Florida areas there are “Prohibited Application Periods” for fertilization that include:
- During a Local Weather Service Flood Watch or Warning
- During a Tropical Storm Watch or Warning
- During a Hurricane Watch or Warning
- If Two Inches of Rain or More is Expected to Fall Within a One-Day Period
It is also prohibited to fertilize within ten feet of a water body.
