What Grass is Resistant to Sugarcane Mosaic Virus?

November 4, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

Unlike most lawn diseases caused by fungi, a viral infection like sugarcane mosaic virus can’t be treated with fungicides or pesticides. Viral lawn diseases can be devastating to Palm Beach County lawns and in extreme cases may kill the entire lawn. This is referred to as LVN or lethal viral necrosis.

The most popular sod grass for West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Jupiter and other Palm Beach County, Florida cities is St. Augustine sod and some HOAs and communities in Palm Beach County even require it. Floratam is an extremely popular variety of St. Augustine grass that unfortunately is particularly vulnerable to sugarcane mosaic virus. Bermudagrass and bahiagrass are also susceptible, but to a lessor extent.

Bitterblue and Palmetto are both varieties of St. Augustine grass that are more resistant to sugarcane mosaic virus and the state of Florida even suggests using Palmetto type St. Augustine sod. If St. Augustine sod isn’t a requirement, Zoysiagrass might be a good choice as it does not seem to be susceptible to virus.

Who Can Diagnose South Florida Lawn Problems?

November 3, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Lawn treatment company West Palm Beach, FL

A professional lawn treatment specialist can usually diagnose your South Florida lawn problems by checking for lawn pests, unusual discoloration, fungi and diseases, or even deficient irrigation problems via a simple visual inspection and possibly a soil test. In extreme situations, a soil sample may need to be sent to The University of Florida for further review.

South Florida lawn problems can be caused by a variety of different issues from something as simple as improper irrigation to something as complex as sugarcane mosaic virus, so getting the proper diagnoses can mean the difference between a simple fungicide application to a complete removal and replacement of your sod grass. Lawn pests, drought damage, fertilizer deficiencies and lawn diseases all can cause your lawn to appear to be under attack, but understanding the root cause of your problem early can save you a lot of money down the road. Our Palm Beach County professional lawn treatment technicians have the knowledge to detect the signs of lawn pest problems, lawn diseases other possible lawn problems before they become overwhelming.

Symptoms of Possible Lawn Disease

  • Does your lawn have unusual spots or lesions on the sod grass blades?
  • Does your lawn have repetitive spots covering the turf grass area?
  • Does your lawn have patches of discoloration for no apparent reason?
  • Does your lawn have seem to be covered in baby powder?

Lawn diseases are commonly overlooked because they are easily mistaken with other lawn problems such as chinch bug damage or drought. A lawn treatment professional should be able to catch lawn diseases at an early stage before it becomes too late to repair the damage caused by them.

*A viral infection like sugarcane mosaic virus can’t be treated with fungicides and can be devastating to Palm Beach County lawns. In severe cases it may kill the entire lawn, which is called LVN or lethal viral necrosis. Beware of any lawn treatment company that says they can cure sugarcane mosaic virus. Also, it may be necessary for us to send a soil sample to The University of Florida to positively identify sugarcane mosaic virus.

The best way to maintain a healthy, beautiful South Florida lawn is with the proper combination of fertilization, weed control and pest control. Add in adequate irrigation, disease management and lawn maintenance and you should be enjoying a beautiful, lush, green lawn year-round.

Take-All Root Rot Treatment & Prevention

November 2, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

Take-all root rot is a very common lawn disease in Palm Beach County caused by the Gaeumannomyces graminis var. fungal pathogen that attacks just about all warm-season sod grasses. Take-all root rot, like its name implies, can devastate the root system of St. Augustine and other sod grasses which in turn prevents the sod grass from being supplied with adequate nutrients and irrigation from the underlying soil. You won’t see take-all root rot fungi damage to the actual blades of grass until the lack of water and nutrients has started to cause the area of sod grass to die off. This disease is triggered by heavy rainfall and most commonly occurs around hurricane season in South Florida (the summer months and early fall).

* Technically, there really is no prevention and/or controlling take-all root rot. The fungus that causes take-all root rot lives in the thatch layer of your sod grass and is naturally present at all times in the soil of your South Florida lawn. The fungi only become a problem when your lawn is under stress from excess irrigation or rainfall, poor drainage and extreme temperatures

Take-all root rot is almost impossible to treat once you have noticed the visible portions of your lawn to die off, so prevention is the best deterrent for this fungal infection.

Take-All Root Rot Fungus Best Practices For Prevention

  • Improving Drainage in Your Soil
  • Have a Soil Amendment Done if Needed
  • Raise Cutting Height on Lawn Mowers for Drought Stressed Lawns
  • Avoid Liming Your St. Augustine Lawn During the Rainy Season

Will Take-All Root Rot Go Away Without Treatment?

Left untreated, take-all root rot fungus will spread throughout your commercial or residential West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington or Jupiter lawn and create large, unsightly patches of dead sod. So waiting to see if it goes away on its own will only cause a bigger problem for you and your lawn. Focus on what caused the pathogen to become active. Was is stress, poor drainage, unusually high rainfall or something else.

Do Fungicides Work on Take-All Root Rot?

Yes, take-all root rot fungus can be managed with the use of the proper fungicides, but because the pathogen is naturally prevalent in South Florida you should make whatever changes are necessary to prevent the fungal disease from becoming active. If the disease is a recurring problem it is best to apply the fungicide as a prevention and not a cure, so apply before symptoms are detected.

Why not leave your lawn fungal disease problems to a professional? Our highly trained pest control and fertilization technicians have been keeping the lawns of West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Jupiter and other Palm Beach County, Florida cities lush, green and fungus free for over twenty five years.

What are the Different Types of St. Augustine Sod?

November 1, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

St. Augustine grass is the single most popular choice for sod in Palm Beach County and it is even a requirement for some HOAs and cities. St. Augustine grass has a wider blade and is not as soft as many types of grass you might be used to up north, but its resistance to saltwater and other factors make it a perfect choice for our area.

Floratam and St. Augustine are sometimes thought of as the same thing, but Floratam is actually a type of St. Augustine grass. But it is not your only choice.

The Six Primary Types of St. Augustine Sod Grass in Palm Beach County:

  • Bitterblue St. Augustine Grass
  • CitraBlue St. Augustine Gras
  • Floratam St. Augustine Grass
  • Palmetto St. Augustine Grass
  • ProVista St. Augustine Grass
  • Seville St. Augustine Grass

These St. Augustine grasses all vary in sun tolerance, irrigation and maintenance needs and the best one for you depends on your particular situation. If sugarcane mosaic virus is a concern to you, then Bitterblue and Palmetto are both varieties of St. Augustine grass that are more resistant and the state of Florida even suggests using Palmetto type St. Augustine sod.

No matter what type of St. Augustine grass you decide on for your Palm Beach County lawn, our locally owned and operated company can keep it looking great with professional lawn fertilization and weed control service. We have been treating West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington and Jupiter, Florida residential and commercial lawns for decades and have the experience to get the job done right.

We offer natural, environmentally friendly and pet friendly lawn fertilization and weed control products as an option to our clients. Our experienced technicians can discuss your concerns and the options available to you.

Gray Leaf Spot Lawn Disease Treatment & Prevention in South Florida

October 31, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

Gray leaf spot is a common lawn disease in South Florida that affects St. Augustine sod grass more than other types of warm season grasses. Gray leaf spot is brought on by the Pyricularia grisea fungus and is recognizable by the oblong spots with gray centers on the individual blades of grass. In time, the disease thins out enough blades where it is easily noticeable and if left untreated eventually will kill off large sections of your South Florida lawn. Gray leaf spot fungus thrives in the hot, rainy months of Palm Beach County and prolonged periods of wetness will increase the likelihood of the disease spreading. Catching this lawn pathogen early is key to minimizing damage.

St. Augustine Sod Grass is Highly Susceptible to Gray Leaf Spot Lawn Disease

The best prevention for gray leaf spot disease is to maintain a healthy lawn with proper fertilization, irrigation and removing any excess buildup of thatch that may contribute to drainage issues. Aeration, preventative fungicides and soil amendments can also be very beneficial if gray leaf spot is an ongoing problem. Poor air circulation, poor drainage and anything that causes prolonged moisture in your lawn will increase the likelihood of grey leaf spot disease. Run irrigation systems in the early morning so your lawn has time to dry naturally in the sun and breeze.

Will Gray Leaf Spot Disease Go Away Without Treatment?

Gray leaf spot fungus doesn’t like dry, cold weather, so it may disappear during the winter. But this is a lawn disease that is easily treatable and can cost you a lot of money if it kills large patches of turf grass, so you should take care of any gray leaf spot fungus when you first notice any symptoms. In recurring problem areas, use a preventive fungicide in the early spring to try and avoid it altogether.

Do Fungicides Work on Gray Leaf Spot Disease?

Yes! Gray leaf spot disease is easily manageable with the use of the proper fungicides. And again, in recurring problem areas, use a preventive fungicide in the early spring to try and avoid it altogether.

Why not leave your lawn fungus problems to a professional? Our highly trained pest control and fertilization technicians have been keeping the lawns of West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Jupiter and other Palm Beach County, Florida cities lush, green and fungus free for over twenty five years.

What is the Disease Killing Floratam Grass in South Florida?

October 30, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

Lethal viral necrosis, also known as LVN, which is brought on by the sugarcane mosaic virus can kill an entire Floratam sod grass lawn within a few years of infection. Sugarcane mosaic virus is caused by a pathogen and has been known to be transmitted from one lawn to another by infected lawn maintenance equipment. Floratam has been one of the top varieties of St. Augustine sod grass since the early 1970s and is widely used in Palm Beach County lawns, but unfortunately Floratam is particularly vulnerable to this virus. Bermudagrass and bahiagrass are also susceptible, but to a lesser extent.

There is Currently No Known Cure for Sugarcane Mosaic Virus

Floratam is a variety of St. Augustine grass that is extremely popular for West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Jupiter and other Palm Beach County, Florida lawns. But there are other choices when it comes to St. Augustine sod grasses. Palmetto and bitterblue are both varieties of St. Augustine grass that are more resistant to sugarcane mosaic virus and make a fine choice to replace Floratam. The state of Florida even suggests using Palmetto type St. Augustine sod for this very reason.

If St. Augustine sod isn’t a requirement in your Palm Beach County community, Zoysiagrass might also be a good choice as it does not seem to be susceptible to virus.

100% Satisfaction Guaranteed

For over twenty five years our locally owned and operated company has been providing professional lawn disease treatment and fungus control keeping the residential and commercial lawns of West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter and other Palm Beach County, Florida cities lush, green and disease free.

Dollar Spot Fungus Treatment & Prevention

October 28, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

Dollar spot fungus is a common lawn disease in Palm Beach County and other warm climates caused by the Clarireedia jacksonii fungi. It is prevalent on golf courses and other closely cut sod grass areas throughout South Florida and worldwide. This fungus is recognizable by the small, round, straw colored spots it creates on lawns about the size of silver dollar, hence the name. Lack of specific soil nutrients is the primary cause of dollar spot fungus, so soil testing is a good first step to prevention. Nitrogen levels that are below normal allow dollar spot fungus to thrive, so proper lawn fertilization is key to keeping it in check.

Will Dollar Spot Fungus Go Away Without Treatment?

Left untreated, dollar spot fungus will spread throughout your commercial or residential West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington or Jupiter lawn and could create large, unsightly patches of dead sod. So waiting to see if it goes away on its own will only cause a bigger problem for you and your lawn.

Do Fungicides Work on Dollar Spot Fungus?

Dollar spot fungus may be manageable with the use of fungicides like myclobutanil, fenarimol, propiconazole, boscalid, and triadimefon, but because dollar spot fungus can develop resistance to fungicides in a short period of time it is best to treat the cause by keeping your lawn healthy and strong with lawn care that includes proper fertilization, aeration and irrigation.

Why not leave your lawn problems to a professional? Our highly trained pest control and fertilization technicians have been keeping the lawns of West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Jupiter and other Palm Beach County, Florida cities lush, green and fungus free for over twenty five years.
