How To Control Creeping Beggarweed in St Augustine Grass in South Florida?

November 7, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

Creeping beggarweed, scientifically known as Desmodiumincanum, is extremely hard to manage once it has become ingrained in your St. Augustine turf grass. Creeping beggarweed is a broadleaf weed whose seeds are known as hitchhikers because they “stick” to your socks, shoe laces, pants and other clothing and get stuck in your pets fur. The seeds or hitchhikers are then transported to new areas where the seeds create a new creeping beggarweed infestation. They can also reproduce from the weed’s stolen or a piece of its impressive taproot. Creeping beggarweed also produce a pinkish purple flower in the summer.

Even manually pulling creeping beggarweed can be problematic because of its strong, large taproot. Just a tiny piece of the root can grow into a new weed. The best way to control creeping beggarweed in your Palm Beach County lawn is to use a quality post-emergent herbicide that is safe for St. Augustine sod grass.

* Unlike many South Florida weeds, pre-emergent herbicides are largely ineffective on creeping beggarweed because its large taproot can tolerate them and be used to propagate new weeds.

Post-emergent Herbicides Safe for St. Augustine Turf Grass are the Best Way to Control Creeping Beggarweed in Palm Beach County

Roundup® is a herbicide product that will kill just about everything green, so be careful when using this product as it will damage your lawn and ornamental landscaping plants as well.

Creeping beggarweed, just like other weeds, competes with your lawn’s sod grass for nutrients and irrigation. So once again the healthier and thicker your lawn is, the harder it is for creeping beggarweed to prosper in the first place. Professional lawn treatment that includes fertilization service and pest control combined with weed control is the best way to maintain a healthy, beautiful lawn in Palm Beach County.

Why not leave your creeping beggarweed problems to the professionals. Our locally owned and operated company can keep your lawn looking great with complete professional lawn treatment that includes weed control service. Torpedograss Weed Control in South Florida

October 29, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

Torpedograss, also known as Panicum repens, is classified as a Category I invasive weed by the Florida Invasive Species Council (FISC) and is extremely hard to get rid of once it has established itself in your Palm Beach County lawn and landscaping beds. The designation means that the weed alters native plant communities through its impact to the environment. This noxious weed is one of the most invasive grassy weeds and is also referred to as coastal bermuda grass, bullet grass, couch panicum, dogtooth grass, quack grass, wainaku grass and other names. Torpedograss loves wet soil and thrives around lake shores and other wetland areas.

Torpedograss is sometimes mistaken for a similar-looking grass called maidencane, which is native to Florida and therefore not considered an invasive species. Maidencane is a common grass in Palm Beach County wetlands that also thrives in wet soils.

Post-Emergent Herbicides are the Most Common Method of Torpedograss Control

Getting rid of torpedograss can be a daunting task. Hand pulling and hoeing tend to leave unseen or fragments of the rhizomes which will quickly regrow. In large infestation these methods are also time consuming and in many cases impractical. Post-emergent herbicides are the most common method of torpedograss control, but unfortunately these products also will harm St. Augustine sod grasses. There are effective a selective post-emergent herbicides that work on torpedograss in lawns with zoysia and Bermuda sod grasses, but there really is no truly effective chemical control for torpedograss in St. Augustine sod grass that doesn’t also harm the turf.

Roundup® is a herbicide product that will kill just about everything green, so be careful when using this product as it will damage your lawn and ornamental landscaping plants as well.

Torpedograss, like other weeds, competes with your lawn’s sod grass for nutrients and irrigation. So once again the healthier and thicker your lawn is, the harder it is for torpedograss to thrive in the first place. Professional lawn treatment that includes fertilization service and pest control combined with weed control is the best way to maintain a healthy, beautiful lawn in Palm Beach County.

Why not leave your torpedograss weed problems to the professionals. Our locally owned and operated company can keep your lawn looking great with complete professional lawn treatment that includes weed control service. How To Get Rid of Broadleaf Plantains in South Florida?

October 9, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

The broadleaf plantain, scientifically known as Plantago major, is one of the most common weeds in South Florida and is readily found in residential and commercial lawns, ornamental plantings, roadside medians and agricultural pastures. Broadleaf plantain weeds thrive is soil with a high pH level, but they have a weak root system and are easily removed by hand if the infestation is minimal. Removal of broadleaf plantain weeds before they produce seed is key to decreasing the likelihood of new infestations.

Post-Emergent Herbicide Products and Manual Removal are the Best Way to Control Broadleaf Plantain Weeds in Your Palm Beach County Lawn

You can control broadleaf plantain weeds with the proper post-emergence herbicide, but be careful as these products may damage your sod grass as well. Manual removal for small infestations is recommended and in ornamental landscaping and flower beds, a thick layer of mulch should keep them at bay.

Broadleaf plantains are also edible plants that are rich in vitamins and minerals and some people do eat them and/or use them for therapeutic purposes.

Therapeutic Benefits of Broadleaf Plantains Include:

  • As an Antimicrobial
  • As an Antioxidant
  • As an Anti-inflammatory Agent
  • As an Immune System Booster
  • As an Anti-Diarrhea Agent
  • And More

Broadleaf plantains, just like other unwanted weeds, compete with your lawn’s sod grass for vital nutrients and water. So once again the healthier and thicker your lawn is, the harder it is for broadleaf plantain weeds to take root in the first place. Professional fertilization service and pest control combined with weed control is the best way to maintain a healthy, beautiful lawn in Palm Beach County.

Why not leave your broadleaf plantain weed problems to a professional. Our locally owned and operated company can keep your lawn looking great with complete professional weed control service. We have been treating West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington and Jupiter, Florida residential and commercial lawns for decades and have the experience to get the job done right.
