What Grass is Resistant to Sugarcane Mosaic Virus?

November 4, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

Unlike most lawn diseases caused by fungi, a viral infection like sugarcane mosaic virus can’t be treated with fungicides or pesticides. Viral lawn diseases can be devastating to Palm Beach County lawns and in extreme cases may kill the entire lawn. This is referred to as LVN or lethal viral necrosis.

The most popular sod grass for West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Jupiter and other Palm Beach County, Florida cities is St. Augustine sod and some HOAs and communities in Palm Beach County even require it. Floratam is an extremely popular variety of St. Augustine grass that unfortunately is particularly vulnerable to sugarcane mosaic virus. Bermudagrass and bahiagrass are also susceptible, but to a lessor extent.

Bitterblue and Palmetto are both varieties of St. Augustine grass that are more resistant to sugarcane mosaic virus and the state of Florida even suggests using Palmetto type St. Augustine sod. If St. Augustine sod isn’t a requirement, Zoysiagrass might be a good choice as it does not seem to be susceptible to virus.

  • Does your lawn have patches of discoloration for no apparent reason?
  • Does your lawn have seem to be covered in baby powder?

Lawn diseases are commonly overlooked because they are easily mistaken with other lawn problems such as chinch bug damage or drought. A lawn treatment professional should be able to catch lawn diseases at an early stage before it becomes too late to repair the damage caused by them.

What is the Most Common Lawn Disease in South Florida?

October 22, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

Brown patch fungus, also known as large patch disease, is the most common lawn disease in Palm Beach County and is very aggressive. This fungal disease thrives in the hot, humid climate of South Florida and ends up creating circular brown patches that can range in size up to several feet across. St. Augustine and Zoysiagrass turf seem to be most susceptible and will start to turn the infected area dark purplish-green and light brown before it ends up killing the turf grass. Excessive moisture exasperates the problem and your lawn should have proper drainage.

Once the lawn has been treated with a fungicide, proper maintenance including aerating and dethatching can aid in preventing brown patch fungus from returning. Having irrigation that runs at night could also be a problem as your lawn needs proper airflow and evaporation.

The highly trained professionals at our locally owned and operated company can help with disease prevention, identification and treatment for your Palm Beach County residential or commercial lawn. We can keep your lawn lush, green and pest and disease free no matter what type of sod you have. And regular fertilization service creates a healthier, denser lawn that is more resistant to stress and disease. In tough cases, we will even send your soil to be tested at The University of Florida for a full analysis on viruses and lawn diseases.

Rust Fungus Treatment for St. Augustine Grass in South Florida

October 2, 2024 by Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control Leave a Comment

Beetle Lawn & Ornamental Fertilization and Pest Control

Rust fungus is a very common lawn disease in South Florida caused by the Puccinia spp. fungal pathogen that attacks just about all warm-season sod grasses including St. Augustine and zoysia. Rust fungus, like its name implies, can make your St. Augustine and other sod grasses look like they have rust spots on them that will continue to spread until most of the blade is discolored. Rust fungus may be an eyesore, but fortunately it is not a pathogen that will actually kill the affected sod grass. This disease is triggered by cooler weather when your sod’s growth has slowed and is wet, but thankfully in most cases it will disappear on its own once the warm weather returns.

Rust Fungus Should be Treated Because it Can Weaken Your Lawn Which Makes it Susceptible to Other Diseases and Pests

Rust fungus is more of concern in places where the sod grass is under stress from lack of proper nutrients and/or sunlight. Rust fungus does weaken your lawn which makes it more susceptible to pests and other diseases.

Best Practices For Rust Fungus Prevention

  • Make Sure to Use a Proper Slow-Release Fertilizer
  • Irrigate in Morning Hours to Allow Shady Areas Time to Dry
  • Use Preventive Fungicide on Recurring Problem Areas of Lawn

Will Rust Fungus Go Away Without Treatment?

Possibly. In many cases rust fungus will disappear on its own once warm weather returns.

Do Fungicides Work on Rust Fungus?

Yes, rust fungus can be managed with the use of the proper fungicide. If the disease is a recurring problem it is best to apply the fungicide as a prevention and not a cure, so apply before symptoms are detected.

Why not leave your lawn fungal disease problems to a professional? Our highly trained pest control and fertilization technicians have been keeping the lawns of West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Wellington, Jupiter and other Palm Beach County, Florida cities lush, green and fungus free for over twenty five years.
